Extreme cyclists: Rizal and race organiser Sam Middlehurst with their mountain bikes.
TRAILING and exploring difficult terrain is what excites mountain biker Malaysian Rizal Hon, who has considerable experience in the extreme sport.
Introduced to mountain biking in 2006 by a friend and having since formed a close-knit group of mountain bikers with three others, there is no stopping Rizal as he conquers steep downhills and ascents despite his age.
“The experience is precious as mountain biking is something very adventurous,” said the 41-year-old avid rider who loves being close to nature. “It is a fun experience to explore different trails and routes.”
Riding in his bright neon yellow Banshee Rune Mountain bike, Rizal will be participating in the inaugural Enduro Asia Mountain Biking (MTB) race where his team will be competing against each other for the top prize.
“I’m participating more for the fun ride and to challenge myself further in the race,” Rizal added.
The MTB race will be held along the Bukit Kiara trails, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur on Saturday and Sunday.
Race organiser Sam Middlehurst said the Enduro Asia MTB race would held for the first time in Asia and follow the global standards outlined by the Enduro World Series.
“The race combines steep descents and ascents, and acts as a social group riding platform for avid trail riders.
“There is a growing number of trail riders in Malaysia and this race will cater to average riders who like to challenge themselves in scaling hilly slopes and racing with their friends,” said Middlehurst.
“Bukit Kiara, being the race venue, is easily accessible to the public and its fantastic terrain is challenging for riders.”
The race features two categories, the men’s Open and women’s Open, for riders 16 years of age and above.
There are five special stages where participants will have to paddle to liaison stages in a specific time frame.
Around 200 riders are expected to join the event.
The prizes on offer include an Intense Tracer Frame, Funn Fatboy stem and Funn Funndure stem for the men’s category as well as a Silver GoPro3 for the women’s category.
There will also be individual prizes for the stage winners.
Some of the sponsors are Ayam Brand Malaysia, Banshee Bikes, Fakawi Banshee Bike and Red Bull Europe.
Middlehurst also said that they were planning to take Enduro MTB races to other places such as Chiang Mai in Thailand and Bali in Indonesia.
