THE annual Great Eastern Live Great Run returns on Sunday with much to be enjoyed for the participants, let alone the healthy and quality time they will spend with their friends and families.
The run, to be held at Menara Matrade Kuala Lumpur, saw Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd director and chief executive officer Datuk Koh Yaw Hui declaring it “one of the biggest events under the company’s ‘Live Great Programme’.
“We strive to inspire people to take ownership of healthy living and turn good intentions into actions for a healthier, better and longer life,” he said.
“The run is aimed at giving a unique running experience to each athlete by providing guidance and support to participants through customised training programmes, information via online portals and running clinics to prepare for the events,” he said.
This prompted the company to engage head of Exercise Physiology Expert Centre at the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN) Albert Tan to help design the preparation of the Live Great Run, a 12-week programme customised for beginners and intermediate runners. It covers the fundamentals of running in terms of the right volume and intensity.
The programmes are designed based on the human physiological response during endurance
exercises where studies distinguished these responses at different levels.
It is also guided by the rules
set out by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in
terms of safety in exercise,
which standard guidelines are used worldwide.
Last year’s inaugural run was joined by 5,000 athletes taking part in both the 12km and 3km runs.
The more challenging 12km run is tailored to suit passionate runners who want more than just a normal street run. Runners in this distance will have to go through two tests — jumping over several rows of water barricades and going through a maze.
The run is limited to the first 6,000 participants for both the 12km and 3km race distances.
The race route will take runners past the scenic Bukit Tunku, Lebuhraya Mahameru, Jalan Kuching and Persiaran Dutamas.
As for the 3km run, participants must work together at the same pace in an oversized T-shirt. Great teamwork as well as trust for each other is required to complete the event.
Top runners of the 12km category will vie for more than RM20,000 worth of prizes besides a trophy, gift certificate and compression wear.
All runners will be given a finisher’s medal, goodie bag and
Meanwhile, the 3km run
participants can also take part in the ‘Best Dance Moves’, ‘Biggest Age Gap Team’ and ‘Best Headgear’ contests.
The 12km run will start at 7am followed by the 3km run, 15 minutes later.
The event’s official sponsors include OCBC Bank, Brooks, GNC Livewell, 100 Plus and Anlene.
