Welcome all: Liew (wearing blue) at the press conference to announce the upcoming 1Malaysia Lantern Tourism Festival 2013.
PETALING Street will see the return of its annual lantern parade as Central Market Kuala Lumpur once more plays host to the 1Malaysia Lantern Tourism Festival.
Now in its fifth year, the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall (KCAH) is the main organiser of this year’s festival and it will run for a longer period compared to 2012.
“What makes this festival so special is its popularity with not just Chinese folk, but Malaysians of all ethnic backgrounds as well as foreign tourists. It is truly a remarkable display of unity,” said KCAH president and organising chairman Datuk Liew Kon Seng.
According to Liew, the lantern parade during the opening ceremony on Sept 14 is the main highlight. The lantern procession will start in Petaling Street, circle the Chinatown area and end at Central Market.
Visitors can look forward to a wide array of cultural programmes and activities at Central Market such as cultural performances, lion and dragon dances, Chinese riddle guessing games, QQ lantern workshops and diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) workshops.
Another attraction will be the specially designed giant lanterns, which will be displayed outside Central Market.
The giant lanterns will feature unique designs by the Taiwan Visitors Association Kuala Lumpur Office, Fo Guang Shan Malaysia and the Malaysia Lantern Art Association.
The main activities and performances will take place from 7.30pm every night from Sept 14 to 19, while the giant lanterns will be displayed between 7pm and 10pm every night from Sept 11 to 25.
KCAH vice-president Datuk Dr Douglas KK Chai announced that those with an activity flyer or press release are eligible to collect a free lantern at the Chinatown entrance arch facing Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock at 7.30pm on Sept 14.
“We will be giving out up to 1,000 lanterns on a first-come, first-served basis,” he added.
Activity flyers are currently being distributed around high-traffic areas across the city.
