SIBU: A local shipbuilder, Datuk David Ling Kiong Hua of Syarikat Kapalan Sing Kiong Hong Dockyard Sdn Bhd, has become the Ninth Infantry Brigade’s first honorary Major.
Ling received his rank from brigade commander Brigadier-General Mohd Daniel Abdullah yesterday.
On May 16, 2013, he donated a patrol boat to Regiment 510 of the Territorial Army.
The boat was received by former commander Brigadier-General Datuk Stephen Mundaw.
Soldiers at Sri Rajang are now able to carry out river patrols and charity work such as distributing food to people in distress upriver.
Previously, they had to use public transportation such as express boats to travel as far as Belaga and downriver to Pulau Bruit.
Brig-Gen Daniel said it was the first time that the rank of honorary major was awarded to a civilian.
“This is a historical moment for me and the Territorial Army.”
Yesterday’s ceremony also saw the promotion of four Lieutenants to the rank of Captain.
The four were Herryson Dawas, Abang Julawady Abang Shukori, Awang Jahmari Awang Junaidi and Steward Siran.
Second Lieutenant Langet Chok was also promoted to Lieutenant.
