FOOTBALL fans will be able to meet Selangor’s star players, preparing for the Sultan of Selangor Cup football competition, at the Paradigm Mall in Kelana Jaya today.
The meet-the-players session (from 2-5pm) is being held in conjunction with the football competition which will be held at Shah Alam Stadium on Sept 28.
Fans can also purchase tickets, priced at RM10 each, for the event during the meet-the-players session.
The organising committee, headed by Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar, is also offering an additional ticket for each ticket purchased.
Abdul Karim said tickets purchased would be entitled to be part of a lucky draw offering attractive prizes.
“The meet-the-players session is part of the organising committee’s promotional efforts to get a full-house for the competition. It is not often that the public get the chance to meet the Selangor players. The players will also sign autographs for the fans,’’ said Abdul Karim.
The organisers are expecting a crowd of about 80,000 fans at the competition.
As part of the CSR programme, the organisers also offered 15,000 tickets to students in Selangor.
The handing out of the tickets was held at SM (P) Sri Aman in Petaling Jaya.
Abdul Karim said the younger generation should be given the opportunity to get to know Selangor’s tradition in Malaysian football.
“It has been our practice to work with the Selangor Education Depart-ment in distributing tickets to schools in Selangor. This year we are giving away about 15,000 tickets to students. We hope to see them present at the stadium. It will be an entertaining and exciting outing for them,’’ he said.
Selangor Education Department Sports Unit head Noor Azli Abdul Rahman said they appreciated the kind gesture of the organisers of the Sultan of Selangor Cup.
“They have given us a chance to be part of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup and we will also be involved in other activities, including a formation and cheer-leading performance,’’ said Noor Azli.
The annual competition was initiated by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore.
At the time, it was known as the Regent of Selangor Cup and Selangor Selection became the inaugural champions when they defeated a Singapore Selection 4-2.
With the coronation of the Sultan in 2003, the competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup. The main match is between the Selangor Selection and Singapore.
A match between the Selangor veterans and their counterparts from Singapore will be the curtain-raiser.
Both Selangor and Singapore were declared the joint champions in 2004.
Last year, Selangor regained the prestigious trophy from the Lions when they won 3-1. The Red Giants, with goals from Safiq Rahim and Rozaimi Abdul Rahman (two), celebrated in front of 65,000 fans. Singapore’s goal came from Aleksander Duric.
Earlier, the Singapore Veterans edged their Selangor counterparts 2-1 in the curtain-raiser.
