JITRA Football Club (Jitra FC) won the inaugural eight-a-side Kedah Youth Council soccer tournament through a penalty shootout.
They defeated Taman Wira FC from Alor Setar 3-0 on penalties in the final at the mini stadium in Jitra, Kedah, after the match ended in a goalless draw last Saturday.
Both teams created several scoring opportunities during the 14-minute match (seven minutes each half) but their fumbling forwards wasted the chances, resulting in the match ending without any score.
With fading light approaching, extra time was not possible and so the winner was decided by a penalty shootout.
Jitra FC converted the first three of the five spot kicks while two of the spot kicks by Taman Wira players were saved by the goalkeeper and another was off target, thus giving Jitra FC the title on a 3-0 score.
The champions received the Kedah Youth Council chairman’s challenge trophy, medals and a cash prize of RM1,000 while Taman Wira FC received RM700 and medals. The losing semi-finalists each received RM400 and medals.
Jitra FC edged Kenari FC B 1-0 while Taman Wira FC defeated Temin FC 1-0, also by 1-0, in the semi-finals.
A total of 32 teams took part in a round robin tournament in eight groups, with the champions of the respective groups qualifying for the quarter-finals knockout stage.
Kedah Youth and Sports Committee chairman Aminuddin Omar gave away the prizes. Also present was Kedah Youth Council chairman Ku Iskandar Ku Saad.
