Ridzuan Condominium made the news this week with its ban on renting out units to Africans.
The Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) Commissioner of Buildings (COB) will investigate the alleged discrimination against Africans at Ridzuan Condominium in PJS10.
“COB officers will go to the condominium and meet with residents and the Joint Management Body (JMB) on what transpired at the AGMs which led to the ban on renting out units to Africans,” said Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib.
“We need to find out why the decision was made at the AGM. We will also hold a dialogue with the JMB and foreign tenants to resolve the matter amicably,” said Puasa.
He added that the decision might not be due to racial profiling and believed other factors might be involved, including the noise level that was deemed a nuisance to others residents.
“JMBs are obligated to consult the COB. It cannot impose such a ban as it does not have the legal power to do so. JMBs should strictly impose house rules only,” he said.
He added MBPJ would not condone any discriminatory practices and behaviour that propagated segregation based on race, religion or physical disability.
StarMetro reader Tiggy Munnelly said he was appalled to read about the “nonsensical” blanket ruling at Ridzuan Condominium.
“Worse still, those with legitimate tenancy agreements are being ordered to vacate the units within three months.
“Most of them are students studying at nearby private colleges and are now in a limbo.
Student Azikiwe Obasanee from Cameroon, said since the decision was made and the AGM notice circulated, about five Africans had moved out to apartments nearby.
“This is pure discrimination against blacks. I urge the authorities to look into this issue,” he said.
He added snatch thefts, muggings and gang fights outside the condominium had caused a number of locals to move out.
Azikiwe said there are tens of thousands of African students and a sizeable number of lecturers from the continent who are studying and teaching at public and private higher education institutions.
“We should not be judged by our colour but our character,” he added.
