The plot for local veteran actress Datuk Lai Meng’s ‘future home’ was identified by a feng shui master in 2011, and construction began the following year.
It was not the usual house-warming party as the venue was at a cemetery.
However, veteran local actress Datuk Lai Meng’s — affectionately known as Lai Meng Yi aka Aunty Lai Meng — warm welcome dispelled any discomfort.
“Welcome to my house-warming party,” she said to members of the press last Sunday at what was dubbed a house-warming ceremony for her “sheng ji” at Nirvana Memorial Garden in Semenyih.
Sheng ji refers to a living tomb for a living person.
Despite it being the seventh lunar month, considered by the Chinese as the Hungry Ghost Month, Lai does not consider it taboo.
“I am very satisfied with my ‘future home’, I feel blessed and thankful and I have no regrets now.
“This is a happy occasion as it (the living tomb) brings longevity.
“I hope others will be inspired to make arrangements for their ‘future home’,” she said.
Master Wong, a feng shui master who was involved in the design of Lai’s sheng ji, said it is believed that a living tomb can bring luck to a living person.
In 2011, the location for her plot was identified and construction began the following year.
It was opened on Aug 18, which is considered an auspicious date.
The plot is approximately 185.81 square metres, with a gallery of Lai’s photos and timeline detailing her achievements.
“Having a living tomb has given me peace of mind as I do not have to worry about the funeral arrangements later.
“From a feng shui perspective, it is believed that having a living tomb will improve one’s life,” Wong said, adding that many successful people and Chinese emperors had living tombs.
At a press conference after the ceremony, NV Multi Asia Group (Nirvana) founder and managing director/CEO Datuk Kong Hon Kong said, “We grew up watching her shows and this is our way of showing our appreciation for her contribution.”
Lai is also Nirvana ambassador.
