Up high: The Jalur Gemilang being hoisted to mark the Merdeka month celebration.
KUCHING: The number “50” played a significant role when Kuching Division’s “Fly the Jalur Gemilang” campaign was launched at the waterfront here.
All groups involved in the campaign, ranging from performers to cyclists and motor convoys, had 50 representatives each.
This was to celebrate Sarawak’s 50 years of independence within Malaysia.
The campaign started on Friday night in conjunction with the Merdeka month.
A spectrum of colours spread out at the waterfront as performers dressed in traditional costumes representing the various ethnic groups in the state as well as various other costumes, danced to whip up the festive mood.
There to launch it was Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, who is also the minister in charge of this year’s state-level 56th National Day celebration.
In his speech, Mawan called on all to learn more about the history of Sarawak and its journey towards independence.
“The generation now comprises mostly those born after independence and so it can be a little hard for them to fully grasp the meaning of being independent and the sacrifices made by the pre-independence generation.”
He said to truly appreciate the state’s journey to independence within Malaysia, one needed to revisit history and learn about the sacrifices made by the uniformed bodies and the people themselves.
Mawan called on all to preserve racial unity so that the nation could continue to develop in strength and enjoy prosperity.
The launching ceremony saw the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang at the waterfront, and the flags were presented to community leaders, heads of both federal and state government departments and non-governmental organisations.
Later, Mawan flagged off the Jalur Gemilang convoy, which will travel across the state to promote the National Day celebration.
