SIBU: The national taekwondo team (WTF) achieved a remarkable feat at the recent 2nd Asia Zone Taekwondo Culture Open Championship in Guangzhou, China, capturing four golds, two silvers and three bronzes.
Some 1,500 taekwondo exponents from countries in the region took part in the championship.
The Malaysian team comprised 17 exponents. Ten of them participated in the Ponsae category and the rest, in the sparring (Kyorugi) category.
Of the country’s medal haul, two of the golds and a bronze came from Sibu exponents.
The gold medalists from Sibu are Wong Tiong Yung and Lucas Chieng Tiew Lik, both students of SMK Sacred Heart.
The bronze came from Lau Lee Ling in the sparring event.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, WTF Malaysia vice-president Dr Henry Toh said the performance of the national team in the championship augured well for the future of the sport in the country following a three-year legal battle between WTF Malaysia and Taekwondo Malaysia for control of the sport.
WTF Malaysia had won the court case twice.
“This victory is an important one for us as the controlling body for taekwondo in the country after a lay-off period of three years.
“With the country’s sport commissioner already recognising us as the main body for taekwondo, we are now asking the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to re-instate us as their member,” he said.
Dr Toh said during the three-year absence in the national arena, MTF (Malaysian Taekwondo Federation, which is affiliated to WTF) members had been trying very hard to gain recognition and the recent championship which was the biggest after the court case had proven their point.
“We hope that with MTF coming back, and with the help of government agencies and semi-government agencies, MTF can bring back the past glory of Malaysia in international taekwondo scene such as in the ASEAN level, world championship and even the Olympic. We are ready now and we hope OCM can see our point,” he added.
On the strength of WTF, he said it had been rep-activated and that in this the state Education Department, including the Education Ministry, had been very cooperative and understanding.
Dr Toh who is also Sarawak Taekwondo Federation (STF) chief technical adviser said STF were now going to schools to promote the sport among students.
He said the move was to make
STF the sport’s powerhouse in the country.
