MORE than 40 staff from two leading universities, Universiti Malaya (UM) and National University of Singapore (NUS), took time off to
build closer ties over a game of golf as they took part in the annual UM-NUS Inter-University Tunku Chancellor golf tournament 2013.
Hosted in Perak this year, the golfers enjoyed a wonderful time during the two-day event, pitting their skills against one another at the Meru Valley Golf Resort and the Royal Perak Golf Club.
UM vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon said in his speech that the tournament, which has been held for 44 years now, have brought the universities closer.
“The golf tournament becomes a platform for the staff to meet each other, network, exchange ideas and even discuss about collaborations.
Through the tournament, we continue to renew our friendship and keep the NUS-UM spirit alive all the time.
“NUS and UM have conducted various close collaborations, for example in the area of research in child cancer where top scientists from both universities are working closely in the project,” he said.
“Architecture students from both universities have also conducted frequent exchanges and one of the recent example is a trip to Ipoh to study the heritage buildings. The students have even conducted an exhibition on what they have learned,” he said during a dinner held in conjunction with the tournament on Wednesday at the Royal Perak Golf Club.
The dinner was graced by the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Singapore president Tony Tan Keng Yam, Singapore Com-munications and Information Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and NUS president Prof Tan Chorh Chuan.
The night was filled with cultural performances and a delicious feast.
Golf team captains from both universities also exchanged souvenirs, followed by the vice chancellors and finally between the chancellors, by UM pro-chancellor Raja Dr Nazrin and NUS chancellor Tony Tan.
