YOUNG aspiring models who need some mentoring and guidance in the modelling industry can now refer to Amber Chia’s newly launched book — Guide to a Successful Modelling Career.
The Malaysian supermodel’s self-authored how-to book is the first of many to come in the Masterclass Series by MPH Group, a new line of books by local experts sharing their knowledge and experience in their areas of specialty.
According to Chia, it was not a technical book about how to pose or do the catwalk, but a guidebook filled with practical advice from her.
“I did not know a thing about modelling when I started out in the industry as a teenager. I wish there was a guidebook that I could have referred to back then,” she said.
The Guide to a Successful Modelling Career comprises 11 chapters, each full of advice for young women keen on pursuing a modelling career in Malaysia and beyond.
Topics covered include how to assess oneself, modelling platforms, maintaining a professional attitude, personal branding, avoiding scams as well as other employment opportunities.
The guide was launched by Malaysian tourism ambassador and shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo. Also present was MPH Masterclass Series editor Oon Yeoh.
Chia also shared her own journey, from her childhood days in Tawau daydreaming about modelling, to winning the Guess international ambassadorship and where she is today.
“I had big dreams and no dream is too big or too small. Nothing is easy and I learned it the hard way and I am proud to say my dreams have come true,” she said, adding that she managed to set up a modelling academy a few years back and is happy that she could produce a guidebook to help aspiring models.
With no mentor or connections in the industry, she said she could have easily stumbled and made the kind of mistakes many aspiring models make on their quest for success but her determination to make it big on her terms guided Chia through her difficult years.
Meanwhile, Oon said it was important to promote local expertise.
“Chia’s book is a good guide for young aspiring models who need to know the good side and pitfalls of the industry,” he said.
Published by MPH Group, the guide is on sale at RM35.90 a copy.
It will also be available as an e-Book via MPH Digital.
