Swinging into some classic grooves

RETRO club music seems to be the in thing these days and come April 10, there will be something of a tribute to that half-decade period from the late 1980s to the early 1990s when one particular sub-genre of club music almost reigned supreme — New Jack Swing.

The New Jack Swing – A Tribute party will be held at GARIBAR at Lot 10 & G22, Bangsar Village, Jalan Telawi, Kuala Lumpur.

The deejay for the night will be G-Funk aka Najee who was once the rapper for Malaysian pioneer hip-hop collective Krash Kozz back in the early 1990s.

A fusion genre, New Jack Swing (NJS) (also known as swingbeat) was spearheaded at the time by Grammy Award-winning producer Teddy Riley (before his Grammy wins) and Bernard Bell.

Hits from Bobby Brown, Bell Biv Devoe, New Edition, MC Hammer, Babyface, Paula Abdul and heavier sounds from Heavy D and The Boyz, En Vogue, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Jodeci, Wrecks-N-Effect and dozens more artistes soundtracked the scene.

Even Janet Jackson and her brother, the late Michael, were credited as early influences on the genre.

Coincidentally, April 2013 also marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Malaysia’s first New Jack Swing album New Jack The Streetbeat — Krash Kozz’s third (and last) album.

On Dec 23, 1992, Krash Kozz’s then manager Mohd Firhad (now of JS Events) had a phone conversation with Teddy Riley himself, the NJS Godfather, who told them to spread the NJS craze in this country.

Recorded by Najee himself, along with the rest of the line-up and fellow Baze DJs Fawzi and Albert, the 10-song album was a collection of NJS tunes that were fused with elements of jazz, gospel, R&B, classical rap and pop.

Krash Kozz, meanwhile, went on to achieve bigger things after the release of their third album. Sadly, their last performance was at Ministry of Sound in London in Jan 1994, as the group disbanded soon after.

Fast forward to April 10, why not dust off your oversized leather bomber jacket and make your way to Garibar for NEW JACK SWING – A TRIBUTE from 8pm onwards. For reservations and admission enquiry, call 03-2282 3457.
