GEORGE TOWN: The state’s air pollutant index (API) rose from 38 to 60 over the past five days, causing some parts to be hazy.
API readings at Prai and Seberang Jaya also shot up from 34 respectively to 56 and 61.
According to the statistics at the website of the Department of Environment (DOE), the reading on the island was 60 as at 5pm yesterday, which is considered to be a moderate level.
Kuala Terengganu recorded the highest reading of 78 at 7am and 11am, before dropping to 71 at 5pm.
Other moderate API readings were at Tanah Merah, Kelantan (65), Sungai Petani (64) and Kuala Lumpur (60), while good API readings were recorded in Labuan (29), Miri (29) and Sandakan (31).
Visibility in Bayan Lepas, Prai and Butterworth stood at between 6km and 5km.
According to the Singapore Weather Information Portal, 1,009 hotspots were detected mainly in central Vietnam and northern Thailand and 57 in Peninsular Malaysia.
It was reported on the website also that the northern ASEAN region of Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Lao PDR are experiencing dry weather.
