DARTS Soul emerged winners in the inaugural Johnnie Walker Gold Cup Team Darts Championship held at iDarts Gold in Setia Walk, Puchong, recently.
Darts Soul beat Black Knights 2-0 in the final to emerge champions and took home RM10,000 and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve.
Black Knights comprising three darters — Anson Oh Wai Leong, Nick Leong and Andrea Cheah — received RM2,500 and a bottle of Johhnie Walker Gold Reserve.
Oh said the team had been practising about three times a week for the last five months at iDarts venues throughout the Klang Valley.
“We knew that practice makes perfect and we trained together all the time to ensure we were prepared mentally and physically to reach our goal but only managed second place.
“As for the championship money, we will use it to compete in the upcoming World Soft Tip Darts Championship that will be held in Hong Kong on April 28.
“We are hoping to reach the final of the World Championship and it would certainly be a good experience for a Malaysian team to have world rankings and be on the world stage,” he said.
The championship, which was jointly organised by iDarts Malaysia and Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve, is one of the most lucrative soft tip darts competition in the country.
The month-long championship saw family and friends from the darting community coming together to cheer their favourite darters.
Unlike regular dart games, darters here had to compete on the soft tip dart board.
The soft tip dart board, called Dartslive2 dart machine comes with four Dartslive member card slots, which allow players to connect and compete with others around the world online via live streaming.
This is a unique integrated feature that sets itself apart from other dart boards.
iDarts Malaysia general manager Alex Chuah said he hoped such competitions would encourage more Malaysian youth to take up the sport seriously.
Johnnie Walker Malaysia senior brand manager Charles James Wright said the brand was proud to be associated with the riveting competition.
“This has elevated the lifestyle of soft tip darting in the country,” he said.
A total of 66 teams took part in three preliminary rounds held at iDarts Gold, iDarts Hex in Scott Garden and iDarts Quad in Sunway Giza.
From the 66 teams, only 12 teams qualified for the grand finals.
The 12 teams were iDarts Gold Locos, Orion A, Darts Soul, Kamikaze, Bulls Eye Cafe, Orion F, Black Knights, Bulls Eye, Infinitex B, Black Knight’s Q, Orion X and Orion Z.
Each team consists of three players and games were decided over three rounds.
