PEKAN: The recent DRB-Hicom Karting Championship at the Pekan Speedway, Taman Tasik Sultan Abu Bakar attracted a total of 29 teams competing among themselves in the 990m race track.
The event held for the third consecutive year was hosted by International College of Automotive (ICAM).
Themed “Powered by Modenas and Driven by ICAM,” DRB-Hicom Berhad group managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil flagged off the event.
Among the leading names in the automotive industry which took part were DRB-Hicom, Mercedes Benz (M) Sdn Bhd, Volkswagen Group (M) Sdn Bhd, Euromobil Sdn Bhd and Proton Holdings Bhd.
Other participating teams include Automotive Manufacturers (M) Sdn Bhd, Hicom Automotive Manufacturers (M) Sdn Bhd, DRB-Hicom Auto Solutions Sdn Bhd, DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd, Edaran Otomobil Nasional Bhd, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, Puspakom Sdn Bhd, Bank Muamalat (M) Bhd, Glenmarie Properties Sdn Bhd, Hicom University College Sdn Bhd, Isuzu Hicom (M) Sdn Bhd, Hicom-Honda Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, Hicom Teck See Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Oriental Summit Industries Sdn Bhd, PHN Industry Sdn Bhd, USF-Hicom (M) Sdn Bhd, KL Airport Service Sdn Bhd, Pos Malaysia Bhd and Proton Parts Centre Sdn Bhd.
Two specially invited teams, the Royal Malaysian Police and Pekan District Council also competed in the championship.
The keenly-contested race saw participating teams exhibiting their talents and skills in manoeuvering the karts, powered by a new engine designed by Modenas.
Combining a semi-automatic four-speed drive hand shifter and a 123cc with 17hp capacity, the new engine provided more power as compared to the previous engine with a 115cc with 12.6hp.
Mohd Khamil said the event was a good platform to strengthen ties among companies within the DRB-Hicom Group, industry players and stakeholders.
He said in addition, the championship could help to promote Pekan as an automotive hub as well as ICAM as a learning institution focused on automotive industry.
