Similarities in the way new year is celebrated

HAVING never been involved in Chinese New Year celebrations before, there are some traditions that are completely foreign to me: the symbolic colours and foods, vivid red lanterns glowing in every corner of the city and unfamiliar characters including dancing lions and celebrated snakes.

Coming from Australia, the new year does not usually inspire such auspicious celebrations. The focus of the festivities is more about enjoying the present moment, not dwelling on the past or being worried about the future.
