THE Penang football team have set themselves the goal of winning a place in the Premier League after several promising matches.
Football Association of Penang (FAP) president Mohamed Foaz Hamid said they aimed to get the team promoted to the Malaysia Premier League next season.
“Our players are training two sessions daily and the spirit among them is high,” he said.
The team, currently in division three of the FAM Cup League, beat PDRM in the FA Cup on Jan 25 with a 2-1 score and on Monday, thrashed PDRM 3-0 in the President’s Cup.
Coach Merzagua Abderrazak said the team had received several invitations for a friendly match, one of which is against UiTM today at the City Stadium.
“Our next game after that is against Pahang on Feb 17 before
we play our first match in the
FAM League against Terengganu on Feb 26,” he said during a visit to Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mansor Othman’s office in Komtar on Thursday.
Merzagua, known as ‘The Great Merz’ during his heyday as a striker in the Penang team, said he would do his best to take the team to its former glory.
Mansor said he was confident the leadership in the FAP would lift the team to new heights in the country’s football scene.
“The state will offer full support,” he said.
