Rituals and sacrifices during Thaipusam can leave some overwhelmed

A SWELL of chanting follows a man as he stumbles past, his face pierced and a silver pal (milk pot) kavadi perched on his head. He is struggling to remain standing as he makes his way to the base of the stairs.

Eight men surround him, grabbing his hands and pinning them to the kavadi. He is pushed along the away, his pierced tongue hanging from the mouth, eyes rolling into his head.
