Chong Wei draws the crowd

HUNDREDS of people especially badminton fans were all giddy with excitement when national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei made a special appearance at the Sunshine Farlim Shopping Mall in Air Itam, Penang.

Among them were brothers Tan Yi Hong, 10, and Yi Zhang, seven, who were among 100 lucky shoppers to get an autograph and a picture taken with the Olympic silver medallist.

The brothers, who love playing badminton, even brought their rackets along to show them to Chong Wei who was at the mall recently to launch Cafe 99’s new products – Cafe 99 Hazelnut Ipoh White Coffee and Cafe 99 Teh Tarik.

Their mother, Ooi Mei Gaik, 40, a housewife, said her sons were excited to meet their idol in person.

“They like badminton and would watch Chong Wei’s matches on TV. Their father had read about his special appearance in Sunshine Farlim, so we decided to bring them here,” she said.

Many shoppers were also seen holding on to Chong Wei’s autobiography ‘Dare to be a Champion’ and eagerly waiting for him to pen his signature on their books.

CNI Holdings Bhd executive director Chew Boon Swee was also present to launch the products with Chong Wei.

Cafe 99 is a brand owned by Exclusive Mark, a subsidiary of CNI Holdings Bhd.

The autograph session with Chong Wei was held in conjunction with the launch of the new products to allow fans to get closer to their local hero.

Those interested can also participate in the ‘Cafe 99 Our Hero Our Pride!’ contest which will end on Jan 31.

Up for grabs are the main prize of RM9,999 and monthly prizes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Contest forms are available at Cafe 99 Malaysia’s Facebook page.
