BEFORE I had ever stepped foot in Malaysia, I had met a few Malaysians during my travels. One thing they all had in common was a love of Malaysian food – that is to say, they had packed food from Malaysia to bring with them on their trip.

They taught me to ask better questions when being invited to makan with travelling Malaysians, as such an invitation could well mean meeting at their hotel room to share a bowl of instant noodles.
