No open house, no thanks to the Eagles

(BRIEF CAPTION) Lim Chin Ewe,51(stand left) enjoying their reunion dinner in front of their family house in Jim Jetty during the Chinese New Year eve at Weld Quay, Georgetown, Penang yesterday. January,30,2014. ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star.

I ESCAPED Chinese New Year celebrations as my family was in Perth, Australia, this year. It was not by design, though.

You see, last June I bought a ticket to watch my all-time favourite band, the Eagles, live in concert in Perth on Feb 18. I did not realise at the time that it was Chinese New Year eve. The ticket was non-refundable and, having missed the Eagles’ concert in Singapore the last time they performed in this part of the world, I just didn’t want to miss it again.
