Drift fishing for a quick catch

1 Majestic Mt Santubong greets anglers as they head toward the river mouth leading to the South China Sea.2 Anglers busy fighting the red snappers.3 Aside from the red snapper, anglers like Michael Tay also hook up a 1.5kg bream in one of the ‘holes’ found on the seabed.4 Angler Christopher Choo with one of the red snappers caught using the drift-fishing method.

Drift-fishing around the reefs and rocky seabed is one of the many techniques used by Sabah and Sarawak anglers to hunt for big red snappers and groupers.

While this method is not really popular, as it requires skilful manoeuvring of the boat and the ability to read the sonar imagery spectrums to identify the schools of baitfish, thermoclines and target the desired species, it has been used for a while now.
