SOME 300 people attended the World Mental Health Day and World Alzheimer’s Day joint celebration at the Taiping Lake Gardens last month. The event, organised by the Taiping Society for Psychiatric Education and held on Oct 24, was meant to create awareness and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses.
Launched by Taiping Hospital’s director Dr Kamaruddin Alias and deputy director Dr Narimah Yusof, the event included talks on mental health, relaxation therapy sessions and free screening for physical health. There were also booths selling handcrafts made by patients as part of their rehabilitation, and free assessments of memory and stress levels.
