EXPECTING Thaipusam to be a strictly solemn religious festival, Swedish tourist Jacqueline Styren, 21, was amazed to find herself having fun as she helped the devotees to smash coconuts.
The young woman was spotting gleefully scooping up coconuts in both hands and smashing them along with the crowd gathered in Jalan Datuk Keramat, Penang. The ritual is to cleanse the way for Lord Muruga’s silver chariot.
