Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton headed to distant shores to present their Cruise and Resort 2014/15 collections.
IT was an interesting month in fashion with the recent presentation of the Resort and Cruise 2014/15 collections. These collections are always presented in unusual and exotic locales and this year was no different.
Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton took to vastly different places – Chanel to Dubai, Dior to Brooklyn and Louis Vuitton to Monaco – and the result was a collection of eclectic and beautiful clothes, with plenty of key accessories.
Here’s a look at the collections:
Island in the sun
The highly anticipated 2014-2015 Chanel Cruise collection from the French luxury brand was unveiled by creative director Karl Lagerfeld on an island near Dubai.
At the exclusive event, guests were presented with a collection inspired by traditional Middle Eastern art but featuring a contemporary or even futuristic slant.
For this new collection, the couturier emphasised delicate and flowing fabrics such as silk chiffon, linen, cotton voile or silk crepe. Tweeds, Chanel’s signature fabrics, were of course present, but in lighter, airier versions.
In terms of colours, the line was grounded in neutral colours, with plenty of black, white, gold, beige and navy. Certain pieces were accented with touches of fuchsia, red or floral prints.
In addition to new watches and jewellery pieces, fashionistas can expect to see trompe-l’oeil three-piece suits, harem pants, tunics, short rompers, boleros and pleated blouses.
European and American influences
Belgian designer Raf Simons took Christian Dior all the way to Brooklyn.
“America is a constant inspiration for me,” explained Simons. “The pop culture, the energy, the fluidity... there is just something so alive here. What I always like in America is that there is such a melting pot of styles.”
Unveiled at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City with a mirrored and LED-packed set, Simon’s Cruise collection duly mixed the brand’s European heritage (exemplified by the silk scarf leitmotif) with classic American style.
Firm couture-style constructions contrasting with playful and fluid silks were shown alongside patchwork furs, suede outerwear and handwoven coats.
“I wanted an element of playfulness in powerful looks, it was an element of freedom coming into those looks,” he added.
Glamour in the principality
With the city-state’s Grand Prix last Sunday and recent Film Festival in nearby Cannes, Monaco is having something of a moment in the sun.
Louis Vuitton picked Monte Carlo to celebrate its new designer’s second collection for the label with its first ever Resort runway show.
The Parisian luxury brand and creative director Nicolas Ghesquière were given a royal reception in Monaco.
The Prince’s Palace was the setting for a playful mix of clashing coloured prints, light summer knits, tweed and brocade, high-waisted tailored pants, and Matisse-like cut-out coral shapes.
Key as ever was the footwear, with the black and white ankle strap pumps and the knee-high gladiator boots being stand-out options.
And the accessories fans in the audience also got some treats; the brand’s famed Petite Malle bag now comes with a chain handle, alongside some new bucket bag options.
Prince Albert and Princess Charlene were, of course, one of the main attractions, alongside a star-studded front row featuring movie stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Brit Marling, Jennifer Connelly and Adele Exarchopoulos. – AFP Relaxnews
