An American brand plays with contrasts to come up with stunning aesthetics.
LAUDED for its New York vibe and affordable runway fashion, Nine West first started in the 1980s with footwear and has since branched into accessories like handbags, belts and even jewellery.
Towards the end of the last decade, the American fashion
brand ventured beyond footwear and came up with an apparel line as well.
According to Fred Allard (GRI’s chief creative officer and previously, creative director at Nine West ), the brand aimed at introducing “lifestyle fashion” by opening up a spectrum (of product choices) to customers.
“We want them to come into our store and be inspired by how we pair our products together, and play with that styling to create an interesting look.
“Also, we at GRI believe that market and fashion trends today are very diversified, so in order to bring the brand to a more inspirational level, we branched out on our product variety to cater to demands,” he said in a press statement.
Nine West apparel is sold in China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
This, explained Allard, was because the creators saw potential in the Asian market and it has been doing very well for the past two and a half years. (The apparel line was discontinued in the United States.)
The first store kicked off in Beijing and currently, there are more than 50 Nine West stores across the continent.
Allard works closely with the apparel team in Hong Kong to design the clothes. However, he is quick to say that they are not created specifically to cater to Asian tastes.
“First of all, I don’t like to segment (the clothes). I don’t want (Nine West) to be segregated in terms of age, demographics or physical attributes.
“I think the modern women today are multi-faceted; it’s all about being able to find the right outfit for the right occasion.
“I would say the Nine West woman is both feminine and edgy. She is practical and not too loud in style. She looks for clothes that she understands and flatters her, nothing too over the top,” he added.
For Spring/Summer 2014, Nine West fans will have something more to look forward to than just fancy footwear.
There’s a plethora of stunning contrasts and vibrant shades, seen in both the clothes and shoes, with classic aesthetic forms to statement accessories for the fashion-forward woman.
The shoes speak of a clever marriage
of leather and mesh bold graphic prints pitted against clean modern lines while the clothes offer subdued hues and contrasting elements against clean modern lines.
In the Full Contrast range, the back-to-basics black and white trend continues to be a mainstay with a monochromatic update that takes contrast up a notch.
Look out for monochrome statement pieces showcasing figure-flattering vertical planes and sharp stripes in combination
of textures and fabrics such as laser perforation with mesh underlay or feminine
For Full Contrast Marine, the surprising fabled Greece and its crystal blue Aegean waters provide the inspiration. This is seen in the soothing hues of chambray and ultramarine.
Nautical influences littered with delicate gold embellishments provide the summer feel which makes the transition from day to night easy.
A nod to cultural clash is apparent in the capsule collection of Ultralight which throws vibrant hues together with feminine silhouettes.
A playful combination of florals infused with hints of sporty elements, and boho footwear as portrayed in the wooden-heeled wedges and sandals with texture-blocking effects and psychedelic combinations make this a bright range to look forward to.
Sparkling hues give way to a sweet palette of soft pastels, pinks and neutral contrasts in Next Sweetness.
Meant to capture the fine balance between innocence and maturity, classic prints are given a modern twist via mirrored florals and abstract mosaics while soft, fluid silhouettes are interspersed with feminine lace.
