Beauty services in the comfort of your own home? Yes, please!

For a change, why don’t you get the pampering services to go to you?

It's definitely a luxury when people have personal trainers or masseurs to go over to their homes. Instead of going to a salon, why can’t you get beauty services to go to you, too?

You cut out the hassle of travelling, and can have a professional to tend to you. You would think that only the super rich can have this luxury, but surprisingly, the charges are not all that exorbitant.

For instance, Beauty At Your Doorstep offers a comprehensive service ranging from manicure and pedicure, facials, waxing, professional make-up, and full hair services such as cuts, colouring and even rebonding.

Established by Cassandra D’Silva, 27, the Limkokwing University Of Creative Technology graduate taught at the university’s beauty salon for six years. After that, she decided to start her own business.

“I found that home beauty services were very popular in the United States and Britain, but not locally. I decided to bring this concept to Malaysia and launched my business in 2011,” says D’Silva, who also has a beauty certificate from Snips Hairdressing.

She believes that when she launched her home beauty service, it was the only one that was run as a core business.

“Others were beauty shops which offered home visits as an added service. Beauty At Your Doorstep is a full-time venture that’s available seven days a week. I started a shop (Velvet Bridal and Beauty in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur) later due to the increasing demand and to accommodate customers who were willing to go to a salon,” she says.

D’Silva works with a crew of four full-time staff and has a pool of freelancers to support her business.

“Our staff are professionally trained and certified, wear uniforms and attend to customers in aprons and gloves. We bring the necessary equipment and all we need is water facility and a bed if facial is required,” she points out.

There is a minimum charge of RM150 for service alone and additional charge for transportation, depending on the location.

“We have travelled as far as Seremban, Kajang, Kuantan and Ipoh to offer our home services,” she says.

The biggest booking that D’Silva and her crew has been engaged for was a bachelorette party for 25 women for which she provided a crew of 10.

“We also make calls to hospitals. Relatives of patients who are bedridden and very sick sometimes request for hair wash or manicure and pedicure services for the patient,” she adds.

Customers range from age 25 to 50, and are made up of a good mix of races.

The majority are housewives, especially those who have just given birth or simply have no time to leave their homes.

“We also get foreigners, tourists and women on short business trips. We provide them with a beauty service at their convenience in their hotel rooms.

“I think our service is a luxury, especially for women who have no time, don’t want the stress of travelling, and are immobile because of health or children. They can enjoy being pampered from head to toe without leaving the house,” she says.

If you’re heading for a beach holiday or attending a special dinner where you’ll be showing some skin, a delicate butterfly motif on your wrist or a tribal henna motif on your ankle may just be the right touch. You needn’t leave your house as Tang Sze Anne, a henna and glitter tattoo artist and face painter, can come to you.

While working full-time as a sales executive with a local publication, she was offering body art and face painting services for customers at a bazaar during weekends.

“I learnt to do body art and face painting, and later, picked up henna art on my own,” says Tang, 38, who is also known as Zen Henna Artist.

Tang used to do acrylic paintings of sceneries and mythical creatures, although she has no formal training in art. She even exhibited her work in an art gallery with a group of artists called Art Craft Guild.

“When I started getting bookings for face painting and henna art jobs most weekends, I decided that seven years in the sales line was enough. I focused on building my own business through my love for art,” she adds.

In 1993, she set up Zanne Gifts Hampers and Events and went into business full-time. According to Tang, henna artwork and face painting can be personalised, and used in creative ways at corporate events, theme dinners, product launches, fashion shows and parties.

For house calls by private individuals, henna artwork can be done on various parts of the body, but during a public event for hygiene purposes, she only works on neck, arm or hands.

“Customers can choose from Moroccan, Indian to modern designs such as tribal or animals. As for glitter tattoos, there are two types: fast glitter use stickers which are reusable and lasting glitter which lasts two to four days is painted on using a special body glue.

“I use natural henna instead of red henna – a more popular choice due to its vibrant shade – but can cause allergic reactions and in some cases, even cause the skin to peel off.

“While there are many similar face painting services in the market, I use professional face paints from Australia which is water-based. I avoid oil-based paints as some customers have complained about the oiliness,” she explains.

“For mothers who organise parties for kids and teens, I also offer hair braids. The rainbow and fast clip-on hair braids are very popular,” she says.

Tang’s fees start from RM270 for her services and her charges are based on location, duration and crowd size. She has a pool of three artists to call on should she get a booking for a larger group of customers.

“Together with my crew, we can set up at a location 15 to 30 minutes earlier, and we always try to complement the customer’s theme with our ‘uniform’,” she says.

For example, when henna art is mainly requested, Tang and her crew will turn up in Punjabi suits, or when there’s a superhero costume party, customers will find them clad in superhero-inspired attire!

Having been in this business for over two decades, she concludes, “Once customers tell me their theme or ideas, I immediately know what they want and will bring their ideas to life.”
