Hair today, gone tomorrow

Time for a trim: Is that wax in the bucket?

Time for a trim: Is that wax in the bucket?

Get into the spirit of World Cup 2014 Brazil with a wax job. And you have the chance to get a free one! Read on.

With the Fifa World Cup 2014 just around the corner, it is no surprise that the Brazilian fever has hit us hard, making everyone go gaga over its host nation – think Copacabana, supermodel Gisele Bündchen and of course, the beautiful game of football.

Now, as much as we would kill to enjoy an amazing all-Brazilian experience come this crazy World Cup season – fly first class to the gorgeous South American country, get best seats in the stadium, mingle with the good people we meet – nope, for most of us, that’s not going to happen.

But Brazil can come to us. In fact, there is an all-Brazilian treatment that we can experience right here.

What is it you ask? Well, it’s none other than Strip: Ministry of Waxing’s Brazilian Hard Wax treatment.

Now before you knock it – I sure did – just know that it ain’t all bad and is potentially a “life-changing” experience.

For someone who is not comfortable letting a stranger get all up in my business – you know what I mean – walking into the Strip outlet in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur was slightly nerve-wracking.

But if you are a first timer – a Brazilian virgin, if you will – the “waxpert” will sit you down and tell you exactly what you signed up for and yes, they are being honest when they say that it would not be a completely pain-free session (and so you are not misguided like Steve Carell in the following clip from the movie 40 Year Old Virgin.)

You are asked to clean yourself before entering a private waxing room – furnished with a high bed and fuss-free decor – where you are asked to strip down (just the bottom part for Brazilian waxing), get on the bed, cover yourself with a towel. The waxpert will leave you to it.

Then, before each session begins, the waxpert will check your skin to see if it is suitable for waxing – especially if you are under any type of medication that dries your skin. Once you receive the green light, you’re set to go.

Now, if you rock a 70s vibe like Gwyneth Paltrow and have let hair grow wild in your nether regions, the waxpert will explain that a quick trim is necessary before waxing can begin.

And finally, it is time for the main event.

Strip's chocolate wax.

There are several types of wax that you can choose from and one of the favourites is the Strip Berry Chocolate Wax. The wax looks and smells delicious, and hardens the moment it is applied on your skin.

The waxpert then expertly strips off the hardened wax, pulling the hair in one swift motion; and this is where the Orang Utan squeezy toy comes in handy.

Strip doesn’t believe in “double dipping” so once a spatula is used to apply the wax on your body, the waxpert will discard it and use a new one for the next application. (Each customer gets a sealed packet of spatulas at the beginning of the session)

The waxpert then repeats the process until ... well, you’re hair free. And once the waxing is done, the waxpert will apply the Peace+ serum which would help slow down hair growth, and another useful post treatment care is the Ice Cream cream which helps calm aggravated skin and prevent ingrown hair.

For post-treatment care, there's Strip's Ice Cream.

Each session takes 15 to 20 minutes, and for something so intimate, it does not feel intrusive at all. The waxpert remains professional at all times and puts you at ease by explaining each step – which kind of helps you prepare of the level of discomfort you might feel.

And if you’re up for it, you can go through the entire procedure in another three to six weeks when your body is ready for another wax job.

Strip: Ministry of Waxing is available in Bangsar, KLCC and Solaris Dutamas in Kuala Lumpur; The Curve and Sunway Pyramid in Selangor; and Gurney Paragon in Penang. For details, visit www.strip-my.com
