After 30 years of research, a French skincare brand has reconnected the missing links to
SKINCARE brands are constantly trying to improve its formulations. New products come with better and more efficient ingredients.
One such company is French skincare specialist Clarins, which has gone on to reinvent and incorporate better bio-tech ingredients in its anti-ageing creams in the last 30 years.
In 1978, Clarins chalked up another milestone with its “cream to turn back time” to reduce wrinkles and increase firmness. Five years later, the anti-ageing cream was enriched and improved to help regenerate dry skin. It was reformulated and re-launched in 1995 with another breakthrough product that had a light-activated immediate lifting effect.
A decade later, the brand introduced the “it” cream to improve skin regeneration by protecting its “internet network” – the connection between skin nerve endings and cells.
This year, Clarins has set another skincare benchmark with the launch of its new Extra Firming Day and Night creams to help women with anti-ageing concerns.
The innovation – conceived with the French skincare label’s anti-ageing expertise – marks the skincare brand’s discovery on how to reconnect missing cell links to improve skin firmness. It also showcases a breakthrough using potent plant extracts to help reinforce key elements of skin structure, said Clarins Head of Laboratories Eric Gooris.
“The new extra Firming Range assists in two areas – to reconnect the link between collagen fibres to dermal cells, and elastic fibres to collagen fibres. Skin appears firmer, bouncy and wrinkles are reduced in just four weeks, based on consumer tests on 102 women,” explained Gooris who was in Kuala Lumpur for the launch.
To perfect the formulation of the Extra Firming Day cream, Gooris and his team collaborated with ethnopharmacologist Jean Pierre Nicolas and selected two plant extracts (green banana and lemon thyme) with potent properties to reinforce links between collagen and elastic fibres as well as improve connection between fibres and cells.
Goories explained that these extracts help skin to maintain its structure, and prevent sagging and loss of elasticity.
“Organic unripe green banana extract has exceptional restructuring properties. It encourages the synthesis of collagen Type I, the most common collagen in the dermis. This synthesis is enhanced by boboa extract and vitamin D precursors present in the oleostearins obtained from hop.
“Organic lemon thyme extract reinforces the structuring and firming action of green banana extract by encouraging the expression of Emilin-1 at the level of elastic fibres,” he elaborated.
A study involving 102 Asian women came back with impressive results: 90% felt more elasticity in their skin while 85% said skin appeared firmer and bouncy. Eighty percent said wrinkles were reduced in just four weeks.
Results are expressed in a percentage after two weeks of use of the creams. The Extra Firming Night cream is said to further reinforce the action of the Extra Firming Day cream to help maintain youthful skin and prevent deepening of wrinkles.
Rice peptides help preserve skin’s regeneration potential by protecting the environment and extending the lifespan of stem cells. The formula also contains Lotus Zymbiosome, extracted from the lotus root, which reduces the growth factor responsible for the multiplication of melanocytes. This ingredient also provides long lasting hydration.
The rich and velvety smooth textures of the extra firming creams are tailored-made to suit Asian skin, giving a soft feel and matte finish. The Extra Firming Day provides fresh, feminine notes of rose and camellia while the Extra Firming Night has the subtle, soothing fragrance of lily of the valley, jasmine and iris.
Technological advancements have played an important role to improve formulations for better and more effective skincare products, said Gooris.
“Over the years, there has been an evolution skincare products, specifically texture of creams and active ingredients. With better and more sophisticated technology, researchers are able to carry out scientific-based tests using in-vitro (cel cultures) and in-vivo (clinical) tests to prove products’ efficacy,” said Gooris, who has been with Clarins since 2001.
Some of its products also rely on the unique concept of biomimicry where researchers base part of their work on this observation of nature to create plant-derived products that have innovative performances.
“It now takes 12 to 18 months to develop a product as opposed to the past when it took between several months to years to unearth the potency of ingredients.
“We also have scientific collaborations with universities and botanists to unearth new biological mechanism that works best for skin. After determining the potency of each extract and compatibility with other ingredients, we then formulate a prototype followed by clinical trials to determine its effectiveness and if it suits consumer needs,” Gooris concluded.
Priced at RM300 each, the day and night creams are available at Clarins counters nationwide.
