VIOLENCE against women is a violation of human rights. One in three women have or will experience some form of violence in her life, according to the Department of Women Development (JPW) under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.
The “Stop Violence against Women” campaign was launched by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development together with the Department of Women Development, and ran from Oct 10 till Dec 10. Other campaigns conducted to address violence against women by the ministry and JPW included Mother’s Day Celebration, Father’s Day Celebration, Women’s Anti-Crime Seminar and Legal Literacy Seminar
According to police statistics, 2,558 domestic violence cases were reported between January and September last year. Reported cases decreased to 2229 as of September this year. Launched in 2007, Talian Nur 15999 is a hotline set up by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to enable early intervention for victims of domestic violence, child abuse and natural disasters. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is accessible via fixed line, mobile phones or public telephones.
