Emma Watson is now a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

The actress made the announcement on her Twitter account earlier today.

British actress Emma Watson announced on Twitter (July 8) that she has been chosen by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women to be its Goodwill Ambassador (UN Women).

Watson first tweeted, “So excited to start work with the AMAZING people at UN Women!” and then later, “Going to be working for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and The Empowerment of Women (!!!)”, adding a web page link to the official statement released by UN Women. Part of the statement can also be found on UN Women’s Facebook page.

“Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting,” says Watson, who recently graduated from Brown University in the US with a degree in English Literature.

UN Women’s mission is largely focused on improving the lives of women and girls all over the world, providing equal opportunites for them in all aspects of life. The international organisation also fights for gender equality, and tackles discrimination.

In the statement, under-secretary general and executive director for UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says, “We are thrilled and honoured to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of UN Women. The engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century, and I am convinced that Emma’s intellect and passion will enable UN Women’s messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally.”

Watson, 24, has been actively involved in promoting girls’ education. “Being asked to serve as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling. The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly,” she says. The actress will serve as an advocate for the organisation’s HeForShe campaign that promotes gender equality.
