The achievements of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, will be celebrated in a new stamp to be issued by the US Postal Service in 2015.
It would be interesting what the great man, who pioneered advances in digital technology and in instantaneous communication, would make of being used to deliver old-fashioned snail mail, but nevertheless, Jobs will become one of a very select few technologists ever to be immortalised in this form.
While literally hundreds of political, artistic, sports and cultural heavyweights have been honoured with a US postage stamp bearing their likeness over the years, Jobs will be joining a very, very small list of those from the field of technology to have been recognised in the same way.
However, he will be in good company as that very small list quite fittingly includes Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Chester Carlson, the inventor of the Xerox. For those who know their personal computer history, without Xerox, there would have been no Apple Macintosh.
The US Postal Service usually keeps the details of upcoming stamps under wraps until a month or so before official release.
However, the Washington Post managed to obtain a leaked list of all stamps under consideration over the next two years and the service has subsequently confirmed that the list is legitimate and that Apple fans will have to wait until the end of 2014 to see the initial designs of the proposed Steve Jobs stamp. — AFP Relaxnews
