Sammi Cheng and Andy Hui are not married … yet

SAMMI Cheng and Andy Hui went to her family's home for Christmas Eve on Tuesday night, as the Cantopop couple's manager said the two just got engaged, not married.

The manager's confirmation of the engagement came on the day Apple Daily said the couple had a secret family-only wedding in Bali, Indonesia, on Nov 30.

Speaking to Hong Kong newspapers including Apple Daily and Ming Pao Daily News, Wallace Kwok said: "On Sammi's birthday this year, Andy proposed to her at the birthday party and finally succeeded. At the end of November, the two of them travelled to Bali with their families to celebrate."

He said the couple had not registered their marriage in Bali and would make things official later in Hong Kong. He said he had known them for "more than a quarter of the century" and was as excited as everyone else by the engagement.

He said he had not expected Cheng to "finally" say yes to Hui and added: "Sammi, who never considered marriage, needs to go step by step. It isn't easy for her to have got here. Please give her space and your blessing."

The couple will announce the wedding date later, he said.

Cheng, 41, and Hui, 46, ended a 13-year relationship in 2004, before they reunited in 2011. In August, around her birthday, she moved in with him when her home was demolished. She has since moved to a new apartment.

The couple were seen on their way to a family party on Christmas Eve, said Apple Daily.

Hui's buddy, Dicky Cheung, who performs with him as part of Big Four, said Hui had sent the guys a "nauseating", "you will throw up three bowls of rice" message recently. He said Hui's message was in the vein of "We've decided to spend the rest of our lives together" and added: "I thought they had married. So he has proposed successfully. I hope they marry officially soon."

Another pal of Hui's, DJ Sammy Leung, played the couple's songs on the radio after the secret marriage story came out. But when the marriage became an engagement, he joked that it is just like the couple to announce their engagement, marriage, divorce and other news when they have new albums and concerts. He later apologised for his joke. – The Straits Times, Singapore/Asia News Network
