Renowned whisky brand Glen Grant enlivens an ongoing watch exhibition.
THE ongoing Art Of Time exhibition features renowned whisky brand Glen Grant as one of its lifestyle partners.
And for the Glen Grant-hosted (by invitation only) cocktail this evening, guests are in for a treat. The brand has arranged for its master distiller Dennis Malcolm (pic) – who has worked for Glen Grant for 50 years – to be at the shindig. This marks Malcolm’s very first visit to Asia.
For the uninitiated, the story of Glen Grant began in 1840, in the quaint Morayshire village of Rothes, home to brothers John and James Grant.
James and John Grant began their journey as two illegal distillers and smugglers. Their vision and ambition of establishing the Glen Grant distillery led them to develop one of the most famous single malt whiskies in the world.
With the sea and port of Garmouth nearby, the River Spey at its feet, peat in the vicinity, and barley-growing plains in close proximity, all the basic ingredients of malt whisky were readily available.
The two “Sons Of Malt”, John and James had found the one place on earth where Glen Grant Single Malt Scotch Whisky could be made.
From then on, the Glen Grant distillery became home to generations of dedicated craftsmen, including James “The Major” Grant, who inherited the distillery in 1872 and his young grandson, Douglas MacKessack.
In 2008, Gruppo Campari completed the rebranding and rebuilding of Glen Grant’s image with the inauguration of the new visitor centre that welcomes visitors into the uniquely different whisky experience that is Glen Grant.
Where Malcolm is concerned, the 67-year-old acknowledges that he was destined for a life at Glen Grant. After all, he sampled Glen Grant whisky for the very first time at the age of two, when his mother fed him a wee dram mixed with water to aid a cold.
He started his career at the distillery in 1961 as an apprentice cooper at the age of 15.
After developing a passion for Single Malts over the years, he has embarked on a lifelong journey along the prestigious whisky trail, becoming distillery manager and ambassador for an impressive array of famous distillers. In 2006, carrying a wealth of experience and expertise, Malcolm stayed true to his roots, returning to Glen Grant, and fulfilled his dream of becoming master distiller for the company.
His unmatched experience with scotch whisky ensures that every expression in the Glen Grant range makes the absolute best of the complex alchemy of spirit, wood and time. Malcolm has worked with Gruppo Campari to develop the product line considerably, with the release of six, delicate, fruity and smooth expressions: The Major’s Reserve, 10-year-old; 16-year-old; 1992 Cellar Reserve, 170th Anniversary Limited Edition and most recently, the Five Decades Single Malt.
Today, he manages and directs Glen Grant for Gruppo Campari with uncommon passion and unrivalled knowledge of the industry.
He is also an incomparable tour guide through Glen Grant’s distillery and splendid gardens, which he illustrates with anecdotes delivered with a twinkle in his eye.
For visitors to Art Of Time today, they will have the rare opportunity of encountering Malcolm, and his charismatic Scottish brogue.
