No Michelin or Restaurants ranking, so Air Canada’s in-flight magazine launches its own.
Food lovers in Canada are invited to help determine the best new dining destination in the country and cast their vote in Canada’s Best New Restaurants 2014 list, organised by Air Canada’s in-flight magazine, enRoute.
Diners can cast their vote for the best new restaurant in the People’s Choice Award from a pool of 30 addresses, already nominated by a food panel made up of journalists, chefs, celebrities and cookbook authors in the country.
Eligible restaurants had to have launched during the past year and were chosen because they “advance the Canadian culinary identity”.
That means a range of ethnic and concept eateries that includes a classic, French-Canadian eatery in Montreal described as part bakery, part wine bar and part culinary school.
Patrice Patissier serves classic French dishes like beef tartare, chicken liver mousse with red cabbage, blackberries and radish, as well brioche breads, ginger cake and maple financiers (little French sponge cakes).
In Toronto, the shortlist includes Luckee, chef Susur Lee’s newest venture at the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel, which serves classic Chinese dishes and dim sum from the Guangzhou, Hunan and Szechuan regions of China.
Leading the shortlist is Toronto with eight addresses, followed by Montreal (6) and Vancouver (4).
The final top 10 restaurants will be chosen by enRoute’s sole food writer, Andrew Braithwaite. The results will be published in the November issue.
In addition to enRoute, Maclean’s magazine also publishes an annual list of the top 50 restaurants in Canada, perhaps because the country’s culinary scene is often ignored and snubbed altogether by Michelin (there is no Michelin guide for Canada) and the World’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking out of the UK.
