Belgian restaurant with single Michelin star is No. 1 on Opinionated About Dining list.

A Michelin-starred restaurant in Belgium has outranked traditional powerhouses of gastronomy in France, Spain and Denmark to take the top spot in yet another list that aims to assign a ranking to the best dining destinations in Europe.

According to 4,300 diners who contributed to food blogger Steve Plotnicki’s annual survey on Opinionated About Dining, the top European restaurant of 2014 is In de Wulf, a restaurant in Dranouter, Belgium that holds a single Michelin star and is helmed by chef Kobe Desramaults.

The restaurant, which uses locally sourced and foraged foods to create dishes like lamb with wild garlic and scallion and crab with green asparagus and lovage, jumped from fifth spot last year to overtake Quique Dacosta Restaurant in Denia, Spain.

On the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, In de Wulf is ranked in 61st place.

“I anxiously await the trending styles and types of cuisine highlighted in the European list,” said Plotnicki in a statement.

“It’s incredibly forward thinking and this year’s list is no different with our European voters showing they are on the cutting edge of the contemporary dining scene as illustrated by their voting In de Wulf to the top of the list.”

He also noted a resurgence of interest in classical French cooking.

Rounding out the top three restaurants on the list are La Maison Troisgros in Roanne, France; Quique Dacosta Restaurante in Denia, Spain; and 41 Degrees in Barcelona.

Meanwhile, influential food critic Elizabeth Auerbach gave In de Wulf a score of 93 on a 100-point scale for unpretentious plates and bright, clean flavours.

“Technically, this was a flawless meal and the span of gastronomic control which the team at In De Wulf showcases was quite impressive. From a logistic perspective this was a stellar performance too; 15 perfectly cooked courses plus 7 appetizers in just under three hours is no mean feat. In De Wulf lives up to its billing and is well worth a detour,” she wrote.
