Glenfiddich has released an exclusive 25-year-old whisky that was distilled during their 100th year anniversary.
Single malt Scotch whisky producers Glenfiddich recently unveiled the Glenfiddich Anniversary Vintage, an exclusive 25-year-old expression that highlights the craft and history of the family-owned William Grant & Sons (WGS), as well as the qualities that have made Glenfiddich one of the top-selling single malt brands in the world.
Distilled on Christmas Day in 1987 as part of the single malt’s centenary celebrations, the Anniversary Vintage comes from a single cask selected on Christmas Day 2012, the distillery’s 125th anniversary, by its founder William Grant’s great-great grandson, Peter Gordon and his son, Dougal.
With only four bottles available in Malaysia (out of 286 worldwide), the Anniversary Vintage is a celebration of not just the brand’s longevity, but also the know-how and vision of the Grant family, who still run the distillery today.
“There are very few distilleries left in Scotland that are still family-owned,” said WGS South East Asia Brand Ambassador Matthew Fergusson-Stewart during a media briefing before the launch.
The event was held at KL Hilton Sentral’s Level7Even, where guests were treated to a Glenfiddich-inspired dinner prepared by celebrity chef Emmanuel Stroobant, the owner of Saint Pierre restaurant in Singapore and also the star of popular cooking shows such as Chef in Black and 36 Ways to Live.
Stewart was also on hand to guide guests through the tasting notes of each of the five whiskies featured that night, namely the Glenfiddich Special Reserve 12 years old, Glenfiddich Solera Reserve 15 years old, Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve 18 years old, Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21 Years Old, and of course, the Glenfiddich Anniversary Vintage.
Beautifully packaged and retailing for an impressive US$1,168 (RM3,833), the Anniversary Vintage is a complex concoction with a rich, nutty, fruitcake nose, while on the palate, there is a velvety creaminess complementing the sweet, woody and nutty flavours that segues into a long, lingering, spicy finish.
This bottling is completely different from the Glenfiddich 125 Anniversary Edition, which was released to commemorate the actual 125th anniversary of the distillery in 2012.
“This one is a 25-year-old single cask whisky, whereas that was a much more accessible product that was available widely, and wasn’t a single cask whisky,” he said. “Plenty of love and care was put into the previous one, but with this, we’ve gone the extra mile to produce something special.”
“We wanted to release something really special that showed off our skill as whisky makers, but also that everyone can enjoy,” concluded Stewart, and with the Glenfiddich Anniversary Vintage, it’s safe to say they have achieved just that.
