Restaurant Nepal's Thakali dishes resemble Indian and Chinese food but with a difference.

MENTION Nepali cuisine, and most people will be left scratching their heads. The truth is, not much is known about their food, especially in Malaysia.
For a true taste of Nepalese cuisine, check out Restaurant Nepal-Himalayan Cuisine at Plaza Damas in Kuala Lumpur.
Specialising in authentic Nepalese fare, the restaurant serves food that is reminiscent of Indian and Chinese cuisine.
A family-run business, restaurant owner Robin Sherchan says the food served is mainly Thakali.
“There are 40 different ethnic groups in Nepal and Thakali is one of them.
“What differentiates Thakali food from the rest is the herbs and spices that we use and the way we mix them,” he said.
For first-timers, the Snack Platter (RM24) is a good start. Made up of six different dishes comprising Nepali Salad, Chicken Chilli, Bhuteko Bhatmas, Aloo Silam, Mushroom and Peas, and Momo, it allows patrons to sample the many varieties of appetisers.
A must-have is the Momo – special Nepalese chicken dumplings with a unique blend of spices. Patrons may choose to have it steamed, deep-fried or pan-fried. It is priced at RM12 (for eight pieces) or RM7 (four pieces).
“Similar to the Chinese xiaolongbao, the momo is a staple snack in Nepal,” Sherchan said.
However, the steamed momo has a slightly more doughy texture compared to xiaolongbao, but it makes up for it through the fragrant aroma and incredible taste.
Another highlight was the Farsi Ko Daal Ma Khasi Ko Nali (pumpkin curry mutton marrow).
Although an unusual combination, the gaminess of the tender meat went well with the sweetness of the pumpkin. This dish can be eaten with either buckwheat roti or rice.
For a more elaborate meal, try the Khukura ko Masu Ra Bhat or Thakali Thali set – Chicken (RM15) which is a traditional thali set with rice, black bean dhall, Nepalese chicken curry, vegetable curry, green spinach, chutney and salad.
Meanwhile, for those looking for a quick bite, the lunch sets are fast, reasonable and, more importantly, tasty.
Ranging in price from RM7 to RM12, patrons can choose from a selection of seven different sets that can be had with either rice, noodles or bread. The sets are available during weekdays from noon till 3pm.
Finish your meal with a sampling of the restaurant’s traditional Nepali desserts. kheer (Rice pudding cooked in milk, bay leaves and cloves), sewai (vermicelli pudding cooked in milk and coconut cream, sudip (sweet yoghurt with a blend of banana and cinnamon) or go for a simple Nepali Chyaa (Masala Milk Tea).
