Commanding and alluring at the same time, Certina's collection at the 2014 Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show looks designed for those who thrive on extremes.
Bold, dashing, audacious in every way – a Certina watch is designed for the man who lives off the extreme. Within its rugged and strapping build lies a masculine elegance and a resolved gentleness. This is where the charm of Swiss luxury watchmaker lays, and Certina stayed true to itself with its collection at the 2014 Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show.
Synonymous to sporting events and the official partner of the Sauber F1 Team, Certina’s timepieces pride themselves in being sporty, elegant, and designed to be both sturdy and resistant to shock and water. “The quality-price ratio of Certina watches is really something beneficial for customers. You get a timepiece that is strong and aesthetically pleasing for a good price,” said Certina’s product manager Niko Grozdanov.
The DS Eagle (above) is one such watch: broad, velvety black and robust, its bold appearance is completely arresting. The stainless steel bezel, with an innovative black moulded-rubber overlay and large white numerals, reinforce the dynamic nature of the piece. The textured rubber strap also lends the watch an elegant and sturdy look.
Enhancing the design is the large skeletonised hour and minute hands, treated with SuperLumiNova (a substance that lights up even in the dark), a contrasting red seconds hand, and a date window at the six o’clock position. The DS Eagle is water-resistant up to 200m (or a pressure of 20 bar) and is equipped with a screw-on case back. Also present are two crown protection elements, in PVD black steel and held by similar screws, trimmed with a sporty red line.
Meanwhile, Certina's direction for the DS Dream (above) was a simplicity that exudes class, style and quiet opulence. The fully-polished timepiece is open, bright and the epitome of femininity. Its thin bezel gracefully underlines its silver-shaded dial and stylish sun-ray finish, its delicate indices are made of rose-gold PVD, and the rose-gold hour and minute hands are treated with SuperLumiNova. A work of elegance, a leather strap completes the charming watch.
Both the DS Eagle and DS Dream also feature an ETA Precidrive quartz movement that ensures full precision even under the most demanding circumstances and marks time with spectacular accuracy.
The DS Dream comes in three designs, with a butterfly buckle, and is sure to be a hit, especially the model with a silver dial, black nickel hands and indices, white leather strap, and 120 Top Wesselton diamonds around the bezel. It is luxurious, to say the least.
Without question, my pick from the collection is the DS-2 Chronograph (above), in which masculinity and elegance have been galvanised by a handsome design. The bold, dashing element of this sporty timepiece is its brushed or polished stainless-steel case and aluminium bezel with a tachymeter-scale.
Its black dial is contrasted with bright-green or yellow chronograph hands and 1/100ths scale markings. And matching the chronograph hands is an elegant black leather strap with fine green or yellow stitching. The two-tone hour and minute hands wear a thin line of white SuperLumiNova, with similar elements on the indices to enhance a deeply adventurous character.
And the most defining trait of the DS-2 Chronograph? Its ETA Precidrive quartz movement with 1/100th sec. “With this movement, the DS-2 Chronograph will have the accuracy of a chronograph,” Grozdanov asserted.
