The Malaysia Fashion Week will make its debut in October.

FASHION is a big deal in Malaysia. At least, that’s the notion one would get judging by the unusually large (and growing) number of fashion weeks that our country has seen throughout any one year.

New on the scene is the Malaysia Fashion Week (MFW). Presented by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) in collaboration with Stylo International, it will take place from Oct 17-22.

As a business-to-business (B2B) event, MFW is to have three main pillars: the Malaysia Fashion Showcase (MFS), the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week (AFW) and Facit (Fashion, Art, Cosmetics, Interior and Textiles), a lifestyle initiative of Intrade.

Intrade is a regional trade event that gathers the global business community in Malaysia, either as exhibitors or trade buyers, under the Matrade incoming buying mission programme.

Supported by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti), MFW will be led by Matrade’s CEO Datuk Dr Wong Lai Sum as chairman and Stylo International’s president and CEO Datuk Nancy Yeoh as co-chairman.

Wong and Yeoh were present during a MoU signing ceremony held recently. They were joined by the secretary-general of Miti Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria and Datuk Jimmy Choo, as advisor and honorary advisor of the MFW and AFW respectively.

“We are pleased that Matrade and Stylo International has signed an MoU to jointly organise MFW and establish a segment within Intrade called Facit, the trade exhibition of this fashion week,” said Rebecca during the event.

Praising Malaysia’s fashion creativity, ready-to-wear brand names and traditional textile, she urged Malaysian companies to participate at both Intrade 2014 and MFW to help promote, position and brand Malaysia in the global fashion arena.

Yeoh explained that they were more than happy to support the country in promoting its fashion. Under the helm of Stylo International, AFW’s debut last year proved to be a successful event that helped put Malaysia on the international fashion map.

“It is without a doubt that KL is the place to watch. Our crop of designers are definitely made for the world stage in terms of their creativity and talent,” commented Yeoh.

During MFW, Facit will feature unique displays of high-style products and services from local and international designers, manufacturers and artists. The fashion presentations under MFS will feature leading and emerging local talents. AFW however, will continue its focus on Asian fashion with its “Asia for Asia” slogan – bringing together designers, celebrities, buyers and international media from over 15 Asian countries. — Bervin Cheong
