WE are proud to announce that Star2 columnist Melinda Looi has been nominated in the Fashion Designer Of The Year category in The 3D Printshow Awards in London.
“Out of the blue, we found out last week that we have been nominated for this, in the crazy-cool 3D high tech world,” said Looi.
Earlier this year, Looi collaborated with Materialise (a Belgium-based company that specialises in 3D) to create some new work. It was a spectacular marriage of technology and fashion, in what was touted as Asia’s very first 3D printed fashion show.
Each piece took months to design, create, and convert into a 3D file, which was then sent to Belgium to be printed at the Materialise headquarters.
The theme of the collection was Birds. An avid lover of nature and the environment, Looi professes to have always been inspired by these beautiful, flighty creatures that represent an amazing piece of evolutionary engineering.
When these pieces debuted on the runway, models presented Looi’s creations in nude bodysuits, with equally minimalistic hair and make-up, so as not to distract from the fascinating details and mechanisms of each outfit.
To show support for Looi, her fans can vote online; the voting process is until early November, when the 3D Printshow Awards will be held in London.
“Thank you to all my supporters, my team, my beloved family, and great friends who have been helping me all this while. Even if I don’t win, I am happy just to have been nominated,” enthused Looi. “Now, there’s a Malaysian brand name in the 3D world map – I still can’t digest the fact.”
