'The watch industry in Malaysia is continuously undergoing change, which is very healthy as customers are getting more and more knowledgeable,' says Francois Picci, area sales manager for Asia, Ulysse Nardin.
In conjunction with the ongoing Art Of Time, participating watch brands share the highlights
of the show.
THE ongoing Art Of Time, which ends on Oct 13, promises numerous treats for timepiece aficionados.
Organised by Malaysian-owned regional luxury watch retailer Swiss Watch Gallery (SWG), the exhibition is being held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
This year, featured brands are Cartier, Graham, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget, Tag Heuer, Tudor, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith and Vertu, the ultimate in luxury phones.
In conjunction with the exhibition, bigwigs of the participating brands share with Star2 why they’re taking part in Art Of Time as well as their views on the watch industry in Malaysia.
This is the second time we are participating in Art Of Time. This is one of the most exciting and dynamic high-end watch exhibitions in Asia, and therefore, a very special event for Graham. Here, we are in direct contact with consumers, collectors and the whole watch community. SWG is a good partner and has done a lot to promote luxury watches in Malaysia.
Key pieces that will be presented include the full collection of Chronofighter Oversize, including the 2013 novelties. The Chronofighter Superlight is a limited edition (only 200 pieces) with a new black carbon nanotube composite case that brings the total watch weight down to less than 100g. Meanwhile, the Chronofighter 1695 Lady Romantic with elegant dials, beautiful diamond executions and a case back engraved with a romantic scene is inspired by British literature.
For the first time, we are presenting – as a preview – our Silverstone Skeleton Limited Edition Chronograph. It is a new stunning design for the Silverstone line with an open dial and porthole on the case that allows a view of the movement’s balance wheel.
Malaysians will be able to view the prototype that has only been presented to business partners during the international watch fair Basel World.
Malaysia is a very dynamic market; the customers here are very open to strong design statements. Hence, for Graham, Malaysia is a key market in Asia. – C. Emanuel Bitton, international sales director, Graham
We are proud to present some of the most exceptional watches made by Ulysse Nardin at the exhibition. The Genghis Khan is one of the most complicated timepieces to manufacture. It is a minute repeater with a four gong Westminster Carillon combined with a tourbillon.
To make it even more special, Ulysse Nardin is the only watch manufacturer that uses animated figures on the dial of the watch called “Jaquemarts”; they are synchronised with the minute repeater chiming mechanism.
Another exceptional timepiece is the Circus Minute repeater, which features two different chimes and six animated Jaquemarts.
We will also showcase one of our most amazing micro-painted timepieces, the Borodino, of which only a limited edition of 12 pieces in white gold and 12 pieces in rose gold were made for our customers in Russia. Our artist painter requires more than 50 hours to paint this beautiful dial that represent a famous battle that took place in Russia in 1812.
Visitors to Art Of Time had the opportunity to see our artist painter Rachel Jacot in action as she was in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 3 to 5.
The watch industry in Malaysia is continuously undergoing change, which is very healthy as customers are getting more and more knowledgeable. They are now more shrewd and discerning in their taste and not just following fashion trends blindly. The competition to stay at the top of the game is more challenging every year. But Ulysse Nardin, being innovative and independent, strives to provide the platforms for all to enjoy. – Francois Picci, area sales manager for Asia, Ulysse Nardin
This year, we celebrate our 180th anniversary. What better place to share with everyone the company’s heritage and history, as well as our iconic pieces such as the Reverso, Atmos, Duometre and Minute Repeaters than the exhibition.
We always believe in supporting our partners, and exhibitions like these bring the watch industry to a higher level.
An exhibition like Art Of Time increases the awareness of our luxury watch industry and the high complications that our brand has to offer.
One of the main pieces we’re presenting is the Minute Repeaters. We have the Repetition Minutes a Rideau watch that is wound by means of the curtain.
The trajectory of the curtain during the winding of the striking mechanism depends on the time being indicated by the watch.
We are proud to have our watchmaker, Jean-Yves, flown in for the exhibition. He will be around to answer any question that visitors may have and will give a live demonstration on a movement. Of course, this is only part of the whole watch-making process.
On the whole, Malaysians are becoming more knowledgeable about watches.
The industry is growing, specifically in Asia. And our high complication watches are getting a lot of interest amongst collectors, not just among the men but women too. – Alexis Delaporte, managing director, South-East Asia, Jaeger-LeCoultre
SWG has created a unique platform where haute horlogerie brands can engage passionate customers who are looking for direct connection with the brand.
At the exhibition, visitors can expect to see, feel and learn the true beauty behind a Zenith watch. This is also a great opportunity for us to better understand Malaysian customers and perceive their real interests.
This year, Zenith is presenting the Christophe Colomb Hurricaine Fusee Chaine. It is the only timepiece today featuring a unique complication: a Gyroscopic Escapment. Malaysians are passionate people, and they truly appreciate craftsmanship and beauty.
There has also been a significant increase of younger customers who are extremely knowledgeable.
Instead of buying a status brand, they will choose a well-manufactured timepiece like Zenith. This shows a worldwide trend where customers are looking for authenticity. – Hugo Escude, brand director, Zenith South-East Asia, Australia and South Korea
