IT was interesting to read about Sharyn Shufiyan’s views on mixed marriages in Star2 last week (A rojak kind of love, Sept 1), and she was clever to quote a real life mixed-marriage example involving a Buddhist Thai and Christian Chinese.
However, it would be a totally different scenario if the mixed marriage involved a Muslim and non-Muslim in Malaysia where the children of such a union would naturally have to be brought up as Muslims.
When a law is forced upon people, one automatically rejects it without giving it much thought, which is sad, because as Sharyn pointed out, mixed marriages can actually help strengthen the current ties that we already share as Malaysians.
