TO commemorate the nation's 56th birthday, Star2 presents Malaysia on a plate – complete with recipes (click on Little Fish, Big Taste, This Is On The Nose, and Puffed With Pride under our food column Don't Call Me Chef).
Also, remember Tan Hong Ming, the toothy Year One pupil in the acclaimed Merdeka commercial by the late Yasmin Ahmad? The boy captured the nation's heart as he professed his love for his schoolmate Umi Qazrina. It wasn't just the childhood innocence that moved us but the powerful message of acceptance and racial integration.
Now, six years since the ad, we sought out Hong Ming for his views on National Day (Respect For One And All). Sometimes, it is our children that can better teach us unity in diversity.
The cake pictured here was lovingly made by our suitably patriotic Star2 deputy editor Jane F. Ragavan, who is also one of the writers of Don't Call Me Chef. After it was photographed, the Star2 team tucked into the cake – but not before a rendition of Negaraku.
We wish all Star2 readers a Happy National Day!
