KIDS may be young but they can use their imagination to solve problems creatively and think intelligently. With such talents, it is essential to tap into their curiosity and teach them to appreciate and protect the environment.

Last Saturday, KidZania Kuala Lumpur and Honda Malaysia conducted a green workshop where 17 children, between the ages of four and 12, learnt about environmental awareness and how to care for Mother Nature. During the workshop – held at KidZania’s edu-tainment centre in Petaling Jaya – participants sat through a talk on the environment, and engaged in activities on how they can make a difference.

The workshop, presented by non-profit organisation TrEES (Treat Every Environment Special), was conducted in conjunction with KidZania’s annual Kids For A Greener World global campaign that aims to promote environmental care and stewardship. At the workshop, the participants learnt about the Malaysian rainforest and rivers, and how these sustain life.

During the workshop, TrEES director Christa Hashim spoke on the importance of the 4Rs (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and how it can be used in our everyday life. This was followed by a question and answer session in which Christa went on to test the participants’ knowledge of environmental facts. Some children (and parents) were surprised to learn that it takes one million years for polystyrene (styrofoam) to break down and decompose, highlighting the need to reduce usage of the popular take-away packaging and use our own reusable containers instead.

The workshop was an enlightening experience for Lara Alisha Colin, eight. The Year Two student of SK Assunta 2 in Petaling Jaya enjoyed the talk on sustainable environment and caring for the rainforest.

“The workshop was fun and educational. I now understand the importance of protecting the environment. I will remember not to litter and encourage my parents to plant more trees in our garden,” she said.

Kids For A Greener World is an annual global 10-week environment celebration, which ends on June 5. KidZania Kuala Lumpur general manager Susanah Abdul Rani said the event would culminate in a tree planting ceremony at Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, on June 21.

“KidZania Kuala Lumpur has been organising the Kids For A Greener World campaign for three years. We are proud to have our very first green workshop with Honda Malaysia. Environmental awareness is important and it is vital to educate children, who will grow up into responsible citizens who will make a difference.” Sheela Chandran
