What are the kids eating in school?

By REENA NARENDRAN

Does my child eat well in school? This is a question that is frequently on parents' minds.

Reminiscing my own childhood, I can clearly see where I used to head the moment the school bell rang … the canteen.

“One ice ball with syrup please!”

How yummy it was. Next stop was the makcik’s stall, to buy some scorching hot pisang goreng (banana fritters) and nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves.

Sometimes, I would just eat keropok (crisps) or kacang puteh (nuts) sold by an elderly lady, who constantly showered me with her generosity. I always got more than what I paid for.

Things may have changed in terms of the types of food children eat in school. However, how nutritious and healthy are the foods served? After all, breakfast and lunch are important meals of the day, and many schoolgoing children tend to have their meals in school. What children eat plays a vital role in their growth and development such as cognitive and physical capabilities.

Something related to school meals got my attention, mainly as I increasingly explored Britain's school meal policies. The subject of school food received notable media coverage recently thanks to celebrity chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver.

Oliver exposed the horrifying and unacceptable quality of food served in schools, gaining the public’s support and awareness.
