A WAVE of anxiety swept over Lina, as she cradled Sham, her three-month old son, against her chest trying to soothe him. He has been coughing for five days, showing no signs of recovery, even though his medications have been given accordingly.
Lina suspected that the maid had passed on the flu to Sham, as she had been coughing for the past weeks. Straining 10 coughs in a row, Sham finally stopped. As Lina sighed in relief, she felt warm liquid on her shoulder where his head rested.
Lowering him onto her lap to wipe off his vomit, she realised right away that his face had turned subtly blue. Alarmed, she rushed him to the hospital, where he was immediately admitted and diagnosed with pertussis.
