Internet sensation Lil Bub makes television debut on Animal Planet.
If Grumpy Cat gets you down with her perpetual grumpiness, then Lil Bub may just lift your spirits.
Born in 2011, Lil Bub is a cat owned by musician Mike Bridavsky. Her unusual yet adorable appearance – bulging eyes and tongue sticking out – is the result of genetic mutation. Her tiny size is also due to her being born as a dwarf kitten.
Despite all that, though, Lil Bub surpassed doctors’ expectations and is able to live healthily under Bridavsky’s care. Her affable owner has even been sharing recordings of Lil Bub’s antics on YouTube, garnering lots of views.
Based on the videos, the cat really likes yogurt.
Today, Lil Bub has over 100,000 followers on her YouTube page, with about 19 million views overall of her videos. After winning the hearts of the Internet community worldwide, Lil Bub is now ready for her television close-up.
We find out more from Bridavsky, 34, about Lil Bub’s upcoming TV show on Animal Planet, Lil Bub Special Special.
What is Lil Bub up to right now?
Bridavsky: Oh, she’s sitting right here with me cleaning her paws.
How did the idea to make Lil Bub Special Special come about?
Previously, my friend Mark Pallman and I did a webseries called Lil Bub’s Big Show (released in 2013, the show featured Whoopi Goldberg as a guest star!).
Through that, we were asked by Animal Planet to do a 30-minute special on Lil Bub.
Mark and I had fun coming up with ideas for a show. We decided it would be funny if Bub had a slumber party where she gets into all kinds of antics with different personalities.
How did actress-comedian Amy Sedaris and singer-songwriter Andrew WK become a part of the show?
A year ago, we did a holiday message with Andrew for Vice Media. He also sang Happy Birthday to Bub last summer. So when it came to picking someone for the show, my first choice was Andrew because he’s a very positive person.
I feel like he and Bub are kindred spirits. They are sort of heroes in their own right. He was thrilled to do it and it was very easy.
As for Amy, I’ve been a huge fan of hers. I love her show Strangers With Candy; she was on top of our list! When we asked her, she said “yes”.
What was Lil Bub like on set?
Bub’s safety and health is my number one priority – I’m very protective of her. On the show, she’s sitting on the bed with a rabbit and a guinea pig. She was perfectly happy and fine. She’s like my daughter so I’m very careful with her.
Not all cats are very affectionate, it seems. But then I saw a video of Lil Bub walking up to sit with you: Were you surprised when she did that for the first time?
Lil Bub is different because I had to care for her more like a baby and she needed the extra help. When she couldn’t walk, I had to take her everywhere and make her feel safe. I think she thinks of me as her mother.
You know what? It’s exciting every time she jumps on my lap. I’ll never get used to it. The best I’ve seen is when my friends come over and she jumps on their lap. They completely lose their minds ... I think it’s the best thing ever.
Previously, you said that you didn’t think she’d live long due to her physical setback. How do you feel about her progress now?
It’s hard to think about how bad it was. I thought I had to put her down because she couldn’t walk independently and was obviously in so much pain. But seeing her run and jump is an absolute miracle.
I mean, even my veterinarian doesn’t believe that it’s happening! Now, she’s running around and playing every day; I think it’s probably the best thing that has ever happened to anyone I love.
What do you hope viewers will take away from Lil Bub’s Special Special?
I’ll be honest, it’s a really funny-weird show. I hope they just have a good time watching it. Don’t take it too seriously and that they just realise how truly amazing Bub is.
Catch Lil Bub Special Special on June 25 at 9.30pm on Animal Planet (Astro Ch 556).
