Former Friends star will headline Irreversible for ABC.
FANS of David Schwimmer and of Friends have waited 10 years for this moment. After turning his attention to film projects, both as an actor and a director, Schwimmer has finally decided to return to the small screen. For his first major TV role since the end of the sitcom that launched his career, the actor who rose to fame playing Ross Geller will play Andy, a writer running low on inspiration.
Set in New York, Irreversible will focus on Andy and his companion Sarah, both described as eccentric and self-absorbed, as they struggle to keep their life together after the birth of their daughter. Andy is finding it difficult to write his third novel, especially following the crushing failure of his previous work. In an effort to combat his writer’s block, he decides to teach creative writing to college students.
Schwimmer will also produce the series for ABC. The comedy is adapted from the Israeli show Bilti Hafich.
Since the end of Friends in 2004, the actor has appeared only in supporting roles (Band of Brothers) and brief appearances (30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage). The TV icon turned his attention instead to the cinema over the past decade and even directed two features: Run, Fatboy, Run (2007) with Simon Pegg and Trust (2010) with Clive Owen.
With the exception of Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel on Friends, all of Schwimmer’s former co-stars have continued to focus on TV projects. Matt LeBlanc (Joey) and Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) have joined the Showtime family in the comedies Episodes and Web Therapy, while Courteney Cox (Monica) has become the star of Cougar Town on TBS. Matthew Perry (Chandler) is set to make yet another attempt to return to the airwaves, this time in a remake of the 1970s comedy The Odd Couple, coming to CBS this year. – AFP Relaxnews
